Get the Picture: Day 4

Today was my last day of my Get the Picture adventure. I started in Taos and headed to Taos Ski Valley to take a picture. It was really cold and I was just wearing a t-shirt, jeans, and a jacket.  We found our picture and then headed back down to Ranchos de Taos to get one final picture without cars in the way. After that, we drove down highway 518 and stopped at the Tapetes de Lana (a fiber mill in Mora) because my mom wanted to get some fiber to spin. After our trip to Tapetes de Lana, we headed to Las Vegas, NM. I guided my mom to Traveler's Cafe ( just about the best restaurant in LV) and ate some really yummy lunch. We were heading back to my little sister's school to hang out with her for the rest of the day and we passed my Grandma's house so we decided to stay and talk a bit. It was really fun! We then drove to my little sister's school and my mom dropped me off for the rest of the day. She headed back to Albuquerque and I stayed with my sister until the end of her school day.

I'm sorry I still have no pictures up. I'm assuming that Jeremy is still sick. But I will definitely have them up for you to see ASAP! Love you!!

Get the Picture: Day 3

Today was a nice day. We only had to drive an hour which was such a nice break. We first drove to Ranchos de Taos and totally missed our stop. We got very lost but made our way back to where we were and spotted it right away. There was a car in the way of my picture but I got a picture of something else there that I didn't even know was a picture on the list. We then drove to Taos and ate a delicious lunch (well I had a delicious lunch and my mom had lamb... THE POOR BABY!!! Don't eat lamb. They're babies! You wouldn't eat someone else's baby would you!?!?) at 5 Star Burgers. We headed to our hotel and were able to check in early because they had cleaned the room already. It is a nice room. After we checked in, we headed to the Taos Plaza to take a couple pictures.

It was really hard to get the picture we needed because of lack of people, but it was still fun. We went into a cool clothing store that had some recommendations for us for places to go on our way to Las Vegas tomorrow. Tomorrow will be more exciting so make sure to check out my blog tomorrow. We've got a bunch of driving to do tomorrow so I've got to go to bed. I'm so sorry I don't have any pictures. Jeremy was sick today and couldn't get the watermarks on them. I promise I'll post them as soon as I can! Love you!!

Get the Picture: Day 2

Hey guys! Today was the second day (of four) of my Get the Picture adventure. Today was a pretty long day but it totally paid off at the end! We started in Farmington. We figured we would eat breakfast at the hotel and be out of the hotel by 8:30. As some of you reading this may know, my mom and I can't eat gluten. For those if you who didn't know that, we can't. For those of you who don't know what gluten is, it's a protein in wheat, rye, barley, and spelt. So we can't eat any of those things. The biggest thing is wheat since wheat is in everything. Hotel's usually serve eggs, sausage, fruit, yogurt, cereal, waffles, and bagels. We can usually eat eggs, sausage, fruit, and yogurt. At the hotel we stayed at, the only things we could eat were fruit and yogurt. I tried some orange juice, but it sorta tasted like cardboard. We had a very insubstantial breakfast and then headed off to Aztec to see the Aztec Ruins.

There weren't any pictures of the Aztec Ruins that I needed to get but it was soooo cool! There was a trail to follow and numbers along the trail where we could stop and read cool things in the guide book. It was really interesting to see how the Pueblo people used to live. Basically, they built their community around a central plaza. The plaza was composed of a huge communal Kiva, or place for religious services and celebrations. There are several smaller Kivas surrounding the plaza used for private or family use. Kivas are built in a circle and are covered completely except for some windows and a place for a ladder to go so people and get to the bottom. Near the back of the dwellings, (the part furthest away from the plaza) the rooms were three stories high. The amount of stories reduce as you come closer to the plaza. The doorways that open to the plaza were T-shaped. No one is entirely sure why the doors were T-shaped. There are a lot of unknown things about the Pueblo people and their community but it's amazing how much had been excavated and figured out.

After an hour of looking at the Aztec Ruins, we headed down to Chama to eat lunch and take a picture. We had some very good meal at Foster's Hotel, Restaurant, and Saloon, the oldest building still standing in Chama. My mom says "Maybe there are other buildings but they don't stand anymore!" There was a picture of a bear hunter with five bears that he had killed. I noted that it was a bit creepy. My mom pointed directly above my head and said "And that's not creepier?" I look up to where she's pointed and nearly scream; there's a bear on the wall, it's mouth wide open and glass eyes staring straight at me. Picture of it above^. After my encounter with the bear, we headed to Tierra Amarilla (a small town near Chama with basically nothing there) to take a picture. We sort of got a little bit lost but found our way out and headed down to Abiquiu.

We went to a very small village in Abiquiu to take a picture and learned more about it. The village we visited is where Georgia O'Keeffe's house was. We talked to a man who had worked for her for over 40 years. It was very interesting to learn about their little village and everything he did for O'Keeffe. After Abiquiu, we were on our way to Ojo Caliente (FINALLY!). Ojo was soooo beautiful. The hotel is different than anything you would ever imagine. The rooms have actual keys (you know, like keys, not those rip-off plastic rectangles..). Since the Historic Hotel (where my room is) was built in the early 1900s, the doors have transoms (window's at the top of the door that you can open to keep the heat moving). The bathroom is a half bathroom with just a toilet and a sink. There is no T.V. and it feels more like a home than a normal hotel. The springs are incredible. There are 5 different springs and a normal pool. Each spring has a different mineral in it and each of them do different things for your body. There are also two saunas, a dry one and a wet one. My mom and I went into the dry one. It was very interesting. It was like summer. In one room. 60 degrees hotter. It was weird, but it felt really nice. The springs were really relaxing and now I'm ready for a good night of sleep.

Tomorrow we are soaking in the springs one more time and then heading Rancho de Taos and then to Taos. We only have one hour of driving tomorrow so I'm very excited about that. I still don't have my watermarked pictures (Jeremy hasn't gotten to them yet, but I totally understand, he's a busy man!) but I should have some by tomorrow! Love you!!

Get the Picture: Day 1

Hi everyone! Today was Day 1 of my Get the Picture adventure. My mom and I left Albuquerque around 8:30 this morning. We then drove two and a half hours to Gallup. I had found three photos that I knew were in Gallup before driving there, but first, we went to the visitor's center to get a new map of New Mexico (ours is from 1988...) and also a map of Gallup. We went to the visitor's center and got the things we needed and then walked to the location of one of our photos. While walking back to the car, right across from the visitors center, I spotted a building that looked familiar out of the corner of my eye. I turned my head and realized that it was another picture! I ended up successfully taking four pictures in Gallup! Something to know before visiting Gallup: there are no parks... anywhere. We were looking for a place to eat the lunch we had packed but there were no parks! We ended up eating our lunch in the parking lot of the visitors center instead.

Next stop: the famous Ship Rock! In travel guides, it says you can see Ship Rock from 40 miles away. Hard to believe, right? I wasn't expecting to see any part of Ship Rock until we got really close, but boy was I wrong. We spotted Ship Rock from a whopping 50 miles away! There were three other rock formations on the way to Ship Rock, all of which were amazing, but Ship Rock itself was amazing. It was so gorgeous! I was completely amazing by what mother nature can do! We drove through Shiprock (the city named after the rock itself) on the way to Farmington and it was incredibly depressing. Since it's on Navajo Indian Reservation land, the government gives them houses that are basically garbage. They are not very organized at all. They don't even have real neighborhoods. Their 'neighborhoods' are kind of like trailer parks except they are filled with small one story houses that are just garbage in my opinion. It was incredibly depressing.

After we got through the depressing lands of Shiprock, we arrived in beautiful Farmington. I knew that there were two picture in Farmington but I had no idea where either of them were. I decided that we would first go to the visitor's center to see if that knew anything about either one. I wasn't really expecting to find either of those picture and I wasn't expecting the visitor's center to know anything about them. To my surprise, the visitor's center knew everything about them! Plus, they knew where a third picture in Farmington was! All three of them were within a mile of each other on the same road! I was very pleased with what I accomplished today. My goal was to take 4 pictures; three in Gallup and one of Ship Rock, but instead I took 8 pictures today!

Tomorrow I'm heading out to the Aztec ruins just for fun and then on to Chama for another picture. Next, I'll head to Tierra Amarilla, then to Abiquiu. I'll finish my day by heading out to Ojo Caliente and soaking in the AMAZING springs! I'm sooo excited! Another blog will be posted tomorrow and maybe some photos too!!

Love you!!

Get the Picture; Picture 1

Since I know you probably are going to want to see the pictures I take on my trip, my good friend Jeremy had an excellent idea! He suggested that I put a watermark on all my photos to make sure that no one steals them! Jeremy is a genius. But then, I realized that I didn't exactly know how to do a watermark and wasn't sure if I'd be able to do them on my mom's computer. Then, Jeremy offered to do the watermarks for me! How sweet! Thanks Jeremy! I now have matched 3 photos! I plan to match about 15 more by the end of my road trip. I have now planned everything out and am ready to go on Tuesday! Be excited! Thanks for reading! Love you! ~Tauby <3

Get the Picture!

Hey everyone! My name is Tauby! I'm a freshman at Southwest Secondary Learning Center. I'm 14 years old and my interests include acting, singing, writing, drawing, and photography. Next Tuesday (March 13th), I will begin traveling around New Mexico for a contest called Get the Picture for a chance to win $10,000. On the website, there is a gallery of 100 photos taken somewhere in New Mexico in the 1900s. Using my knowledge of the state, clues within the photo, or my favorite Internet search engine, I need to figure out where each photo was taken. Then, I need to travel to that place, and take a modern-day version of as many photos as I can. So far, I have successfully matched 2 photos, but I'm on my way to many more! My mom and I will drive around northern New Mexico taking photos for spring break. That's what this blog is for! I will be updating this blog when I arrive at a new place! I will also be uploading some photos of the places I go (not the matches to the Get the Picture photos of course). I will keep everyone entertained and updated!

Love,
Tauby
